Return of the annual Civil War encampment weekend at James A. Garfield National Historic Site on Friday-Sunday.
July 15 (Friday)
The festivities begin at 7 p.m. when the Northeast Ohio Civil War Round Table holds its fourth annual speaker symposium in the visitor center auditorium.
July 16 & 17 (Sat & Sun)
The encampment runs from 11 a.m.to 4 p.m. Features numerous groups of Union and Confederate re-enactors and occasional demonstrations of loading and firing muskets as well as marching and drill and ceremonies. There will also be several musicians performing Civil War-era music.
Popular figures including “General Ulysses S. Grant,” “President Abraham Lincoln,” “Frederick Douglass,” and several of “Lincoln’s Generals” will be onsite and talking with the public as well. There will be regular programs both days inside the visitor center auditorium, and activities for kids will also be available both days.
A number of special programs will be held on July 16:
- 6:00 p.m., John Fazio will speak on the Lincoln assassination.
- 7:45 p.m. U.S. Park Ranger Matt Atkinson of Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania, will present an outdoor campfire program entitled “The Life of the Civil War Soldier..”
- 9:00 p.m., the Civil War film “Glory,” starring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington, will be shown outside on a large outdoor screen.
All encampment activities throughout the weekend are free of charge. Parking is available at James A. Garfield National Historic Site and next door at Faith Lutheran Church (July 16 only). Overflow parking on both days is available at Mentor Office Park, located at 8224 Mentor Ave. There will be a free shuttle between the overflow lot and the Garfield site both days.
These daytime encampment events will be held rain or shine.
